Age of Empires 3 ship battle lag?

In any ship battle during age of empire 3 i get MIVE lag. Its ok until this ship parts start getting destroyed. The game runs completly smooth anywhere else, I even tried putting the graphics to the absolute lowest (I usually have it at medium-ish) but it still doest help! Can anyone give me advice on what to do short of buying a new video card?
